A: No, they're not. 1) In terms of constant 1990 dollars my
rates haven't changed in the last 10+ years. 2) The high cost of client
turnover, advertising, marketing, hundreds of long distance
calls, constant moving,
hotels, motels, car rentals, taxes, training,
all my vacations, holidays, insurance and retirement benefits come
out of my own pocket. It's tough to live in hotels and
motels. It's also very expensive. One's cost of living
doubles and triples when one has to live in hotels and
move often. 3) In addition to my paid 40
hours per week, in this business I have to put in 5 -15 unpaid
hours per week so that I can market myself update my web site
and resumes,
as well as
catch up with technology.
4) On contracts, I usually need
two to three complete months just to break even, just to
recover my initial cost of client turnover, advertising,
marketing, moving and transportation.
